Call for Papers

Introduction

We would like to invite proposals from those interested in presenting papers, running workshops or who wish to prepare posters for display at the conference. The deadline for Proposals to be considered for review is 21st February 2011.

Guidelines

Proposals should be no longer than 500 words in length and should be structured according to the format requested in the electronic submission form below. Multiple proposals will be considered.

We kindly request you to follow the instructions carefully. Proposals that do not conform to these guidelines are unlikely to be accepted by the Programme Committee. If in doubt, please contact the HEIR Conference 2011 organising team before submitting your proposal: .

Proposals should take account of the conference theme: ‘Scanning the horizons: Institutional Research in a borderless world’ and the overall aim of the 2011 HEIR Conference which is to explore the role of Institutional Research in a globalised education context where tertiary level institutions increasingly operate across conventional boundaries: geographical (e.g. transnational education); temporal and spatial (e.g. e-learning, virtual universities and blended learning); cross-sectoral (as in consortia of business and universities); and cross-functional (as in convergence between academic and vocational education).

At the same time, institutions are being required to operate more efficiently and effectively in a context of reduced financial and physical resources, requiring us to find new ways to approach our tasks. How can we, as Higher Education practitioners and specifically Institutional Researchers, harness the available knowledge and resources to support institutional decision making, engage with stakeholders, improve the student experience and student outcomes, and prepare our institutions for the future?

Proposals should address at least one of the conference tracks below. However, a small number of submissions that address issues outside these tracks will also be considered. More details about the tracks and suggested sub-themes can be found here

  • Accountability and Engagement: Moving beyond Performance Indicators and Quality Assurance
  • Supporting decision makers: Planning, Policy and Management
  • Institutional Research in action: Tools, methods and capacity building
  • Enhancing student experiences and measuring outcomes
  • Looking forward through Institutional Research

We welcome proposals using one of the following formats:

  • Workshop (60 minutes) - with an emphasis on participation rather than presentation and participants taking away ideas for their own practice
  • Individual Papers (40 minutes, of which a maximum 20 minutes presentation and at least 20 minutes discussion) - focused on research findings from completed research, or published work with an emphasis on sharing practice and ideas and generating feedback from participants
  • Work in progress (30 minutes, of which a maximum 10 minutes presentation and at least 20 minutes discussion) - discussing institutional research projects or ideas that are still in progress
  • Posters - designed to communicate research data and key research findings in a simple and visually stimulating manner

Each proposal will be double-blind reviewed by two referees for acceptance at the conference. To support this process please ensure that there is no reference made to the authors within the body of your proposal. Each submission will be reviewed and given feedback against the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the overall theme of the conference the title of the conference ‘Scanning the horizons: Institutional Research in a borderless world’ and the associated tracks and sub themes
  • Clarity and coherence of the Proposal including how the session will be structured.
  • Appeal to a diverse audience with a range of interests in institutional research and in higher education research more generally
  • Potential contribution to scholarship, new or innovative practice, and a degree of evaluation and reflection leading to the overall development of institutional research
  • Opportunities for delegates to listen, talk and reflect
  • Potential to provide delegates with opportunities to learn new and innovative ideas to take away and apply in their own institutional context
